HP and Sepaton, a virtual tape start-up company, are expected to announce next week at HP’s StorageWorks user conference an OEM agreement for HP to market a disk-based data protection appliance.
Sepaton’s S2100-ES appliance is the basis of HP’s StorageWorks 6000 Virtual Library System, which HP is expected to launch at the user conference next week. The VLS allows customers to accelerate their backup performance by backing up to disk rather than tape.
Sepaton’s appliance has a capacity of as much as one petabyte. It uses Serial ATA drive technology and works with libraries from StorageTek, Quantum, ADIC and HP, among others.
The VLS allows customers to write data to disk as if it were tape and works with standard backup and recovery software.
Sepaton’s product is built on a file system that lets it distinguish content from files, allowing customers to backup business critical data faster without disrupting operations.
The VLS is expected to be available May 30. Prices were not disclosed.
