Commodity Ethernet switch maker SMC earlier this month announced its first 10G Ethernet switch - the TigerSwitch 10G.
The switch is aimed at aggregating 10G links from wiring closet switches, or as a small backbone device. The eight-port, fixed-configuration box can support up to 160G bit/sec of bandwidth, allowing all ports to run at full-duplex 10G bit/sec. The Layer 2 switch offers several options for 10G optical transceivers, or physical ports, ranging from 150 feet to 10 miles.
The switch will be available this month starting at $8,000 for the switch, with optics ranging from $2,300 to $9,000.
NetIQ last week announced its Security Compliance Suite that lets users perform vulnerability scans, security log management and compliance-report generation. Using a combination of centralized console software and distributed agents on managed machines, the Security Compliance Suite can help customers assess networks for security holes and determine patches needed, the company says.
The enterprise edition also provides real-time security monitoring and enables monitoring and alerting on policy changes, user account changes and suspicious network activity. The Security Compliance Suite will be sold in sets of 25 server licenses. The standard edition costs $800 per server, and the enterprise edition costs $1,120 per server.

The appliances range between $10,000 to $40,000 or can be used as a service priced at $500 to $2,000 per month.
Vontu announced the fourth version of its data-monitoring software that also can block messages that violate security and privacy policies from leaving the company. Vontu 4.0 adds a way to integrate monitoring with PGP-based encryption gateways so that mail that is deemed sensitive can be re-directed to be encrypted before transmission outside the company. Vontu 4.0 costs $150,000.
