SBC Tuesday said it added an intrusion prevention service to its managed security services.

The SBC PremierSERV Managed Intrusion Prevention Service (IPS) is intended to detect, contain or neutralize both known and unidentified threats from viruses and worms attacking servers, laptops, desktops or other endpoints. The service uses an appliance from Mirage Networks designed to monitor and defend a business network’s interior.

The Mirage device is installed on customer premise LANs. It monitors behavior of various computers and servers operating on the corporate network, as opposed to looking for known signatures of worms and viruses in a database.

This enables the service to identify malicious activity resulting from both known and unknown threats, SBC claims.

Managed IPS also includes device integration, configuration, 24x7 monitoring, and security event notification, response and reporting.

The Mirage appliance plugs into the SPAN port of an Ethernet LAN switch. A single device can monitor 1,000 endpoints, according to SBC.

The IPS service costs $499 per month per Mirage appliance. The onetime charge for a single appliance is $15,000. Equipment and service is discounted based on network size and configuration, SBC says.
