Backup software vendor Unitrends Tuesday updated its data protection software and appliances.

The company’s Data Protection Units (DPU) and Data Protection Vaults (DPV) appliances now include the ability to back up data without taking the server down.

Unitrends’ Hot Bare Metal capability is bundled with its DPUs and DPVs. Hot Bare Metal allows users to take point-in-time snapshots of the operating systems on their servers at the same time as they are backing up data. If a server goes down, IT can reconstruct the server and its settings from the last snapshot taken.

Will Bryan, network manager for law firm Nelson Mullins in Columbia, S.C., is evaluating Unitrends’ products.

“You can back up the [storage area] network without bringing the server down,” says Bryan. “You can do it hot and not disrupt user operations. Users shouldn't be bothered by a backup."

Bryan says that other software he is looking at has this same capability, but as an add-on piece. With Unitrends’ appliances the Hot Bare Metal capability is included as a standard feature.

Unitrends’ software backs up Windows as well as Unix servers. The software and appliances start at under $10,000. They are available now.

Bad productBy Anonymous on March 2, 2009, 4:34 pmUnitrends is arrogant, and their software fails often (mean time between failures - 7.3 days). We dropped their products and are using other vendors for our needs.

Unitrends ReviewBy Anonymous on July 23, 2008, 2:22 pmHorrible Product. Does not fully support exchange clusters. Replication across WAN links is horrible as well. They just came out with a new "enhanced" web user...
