HP Monday acquired AppIQ in a deal whose financial terms were not disclosed. AppIQ is a manufacturer of storage resource management software, which is OEM’ed by some of the largest storage/systems vendors.

“The acquisition is a smart move for HP,” says Stephanie Balaouras, senior analyst for the Yankee Group. “AppIQ is the only SRM platform that can compete with EMC's ControlCenter and IBM's Tivioli Productivity Center.”

Among AppIQ’s OEM relationships are Sun, SGI, HP, Engenio and Hitachi Data Systems. The company’s StorageAuthority storage resource management software manages a multivendor environment. StorageAuthority also integrates storage resource visualization, provisioning, monitoring, reporting and policy-based automation across storage-area network environments.

HP has integrated StorageAuthority as HP Storage Essentials.

"We share a common vision for storage-area management, a commitment to open standards and a belief in the role that multi-vendor storage management software plays in creating an Adaptive Enterprise,” says Ash Ashutosh, executive vice president, CTO and co-founder of AppIQ in a statement.

AppIQ’s business will be integrated into the StorageWorks division of HP's Technology Solutions Group.

“What HP needs to do when they acquire the company, is still give it the leeway and the support to innovate,” says Balaouras. “It would be a mistake to slow their momentum in any way.”

AppIQ is headquartered in Burlington, Mass., and has 135 employees and approximately 250 customers, according to the company’s claims.

Among AppIQ’s customers are the Boston Stock Exchange, the Weather Channel and Nielsen Media Research.

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2005, subject to regulatory approvals.
