Barracuda targets anti-spam appliance at big enterprises

Barracuda earlier this week released a version of its Spam Firewall e-mail security appliance for very large enterprises.

Dubbed the Spam Firewall 900, this souped-up version of the company’s gateway appliance features expanded storage capacity – 300G bytes -- for quarantined e-mail and four CPUs to provide greater processing power, according to company officials. Barracuda defines very large organizations as those with up to 25,000 users.

The appliance also includes redundant hot-swap power supplies, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, and multiple RAID disk arrays – all designed to help handle the high volume and critical nature of large corporations’ e-mail communications, Barracuda says.

In addition to scanning inbound mail for spam and other threats, the Spam Firewall 900 scans attachments to outbound e-mails to search for viruses or content that violates corporate policies or regulations, and can encrypt outbound messages. The company’s rate control system, which throttles back inbound message blasts that likely originate from zombie PCs, is also included.

The Spam Firewall 900, slated for release this month, is priced at $29,999 for the appliance and $6,599 for update services.
