SonicWall is buying two other security companies, enKoo and Lasso Logic, to add to the company's existing VPN and multil-function security platforms.

EnKoo sells low-price SSL VPN gear for small businesses and Lasso Logic makes disk back-up equipment that stores files both locally and remotely.

SonicWall did not say how much it is paying for the companies.

SonicWall makes a range of firewall/VPN equipment for small businesses through enterprises as well as security platforms that scans for viruses, spyware, spam, phishing and other intrusions.

EnKoo started off 18 months ago selling low-end SSL VPN equipment with minimal features and has consistently upgraded adding more features and better management. More recently it added remote control features and conferencing to its platforms.

The company has fine-tuned its equipment to support features that SonicWall's own SSL VPN gear lacks, such as support for Citrix and the ability to rewrite HTTP.

Lasso Logic makes an appliance that automatically backs up changes to files in a local machine as they are made and periodically copies changes to a remote site. The gear is intended to provide backup in case other systems crash and also to create a record of changes that can be used to comply with regulations such as Sarbanes Oxley and HIPAA.

While SonicWall has been making higher capacity gear lately, these two acquisitions are aimed at small and midsize businesses, according to comments from the company's president and CEO Matthew Medeiros.
