Stratus Technologies is expanding its line of Windows-based fault-tolerant servers with the ftServer W Series 5700. The new box is the first from Stratus built on Intel's dual-core Xeon processor. Stratus executives say users will see a 33% performance increase with the 4U 5700 compared with the 10U ftServer W Series 6600, which includes four single-core Xeon processors. In addition, the 5700 is priced starting at $40,000, compared with a starting price of about $90,000 for the 6600. The ftServer W Series 5700 supports Windows Server 2003.

3PAR plans to announce this week its approach to information life-cycle management. 3PAR's Utility Data Lifecycle Management includes templates, a system tuner, virtual copy, remote copy and dynamic optimization stored on a single box. An entry-level Utility DLM suite that includes a 5TB InServ array and both nearline and Fibre Channel drives starts at $169,000.
