Univa launches commercial product based on open source grids

Univa makes available commercial products built on the open source Globus Toolkit.

Univa on Monday announced the general availability of Univa Globus Enterprise, the first commercial product built on the open source Globus Toolkit.

Univa Globus Enterprise is designed to give enterprise customers the tools and support they need to deploy and manage companywide grids, thus providing centralized access to previously disparate data silos.

“By bridging the proprietary islands of technology scattered throughout the enterprise with an open platform, our customers can more effectively utilize information and resources,” Univa CEO Mike Ellis said in a statement.

The product, which is backed by Univa partner IBM, was put into beta in December. It is the first product from the company that was founded in 2004 by Ian Foster, Steve Tuecke and Carl Kesselman, the creators of the Globus Toolkit. The Globus Alliance oversees the development of the Globus Toolkit, an open source package of grid middleware.

Univa was formed to provide proprietary features – such as advanced security and simplified installation – on top of the Globus Toolkit to make it more appropriate for enterprise environments.

Pricing for Univa Globus Enterprise varies depending on the implementation.
