Clearswift on Tuesday announced plans to add anti-spyware capabilities to its Web and e-mail security software, appliances and managed services.

The company will add anti-spyware features to its MIMEsweeper line of Web and SMTP gateway products. Clearswift believes that by installing anti-spyware at the gateway, enterprises can better protect themselves than with client-based products that can only catch malware once it has entered the network and possibly already done damage, company officials say.

According to a survey done by the company earlier this month of 630 IT professionals,

68% said spyware is a “serious problem” for their businesses, with 12% saying it is a “very serious threat.” Clearswift says 71% of spyware is brought into a corporate network by employees surfing the Web, while 26% enters via spam e-mail messages.

The enhanced products will be rolled out over the next six months, officials say. Pricing was not announced.
