Red Hat is expanding its Latin American presence, aiming to capitalize on the growing adoption of Linux and open source technologies in both government and private sectors.

The company said Wednesday it will open corporate offices in Sao Paulo and in Buenos Aires based on operations it acquired from one of its local distributors in the area.

Although Red Hat has already made inroads into Latin America, with existing customers such as the Buenos Aires Ministry of Health, the move will bolster its regional support, training and sales, said the company.

Red Hat tapped one of its partners in South America, Julian Somodi, to head up the new South American business units.

In addition to extending its reach geographically, Red Hat has been working to expand its reach up the server software stack by offering other open source products. Last month Red Hat surprised the industry by acquiring open source Java software vendor JBoss for about $350 million.
