XO Communications this week said it is upgrading the capacity of its intercity links to 100Gbps.
XO said the upgrade will allow it to more than double network capacity and offer 10Gbps services for content providers, enterprises and service providers in the 37 U.S. cities it serves. Previously, XO services topped out at 2.5Gbps.
XO’s upgrade will initially deliver 10 x OC-192 of capacity between any two cities on the XO nationwide network. XO said it will also be able to provision or upgrade customer circuits in a matter of hours vs. days using digital optical networking systems from Infinera.
Infinera also provides the backbone infrastructure for Level 3, and recently announced a collaboration with Internet2 to develop new Internet applications.
XO's upgrade, which is about 75% complete, also prepares the CLEC to upgrade capacity to 400Gbps, or 40 x OC-192, between any two cities it serves. Once network capacity is upgraded to 400Gbps, it's possible that XO could offer services greater than 10Gbps, a spokesman says.
The 100Gbps upgrade is slated for completion in September, the spokesman says. It will connect to more than 1 million fiber miles of XO metro fiber across the U.S.
