Lenovo Tuesday announced the availability of the ThinkPad T60p, its first laptop computer preloaded with the Linux operating system.

The new laptop is primarily aimed at engineers, the company said.

Linux users will welcome Lenovo's decision to preload the open source operating system on its new ThinkPad. Rival Dell supports Linux but does not offer machines preloaded with the operating system software, while HP reserves Linux for its higher-end workstations.

The new ThinkPad will use Novell's SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system and an Intel Centrino Duo processor. The computer weighs 4.7 pounds and is one-inch thick.

The suggested retail price for the 14-inch model is $3,099 and $3,199 for the 15-inch.

Both products are now available for purchase on the Lenovo Web site and through retailers.
