EMC's recent entry into the market for information, classification and management (ICM) products is calling new attention to a market that hardly needs the help. It is already bubbling with the activities of a slew of new companies whose software and appliances help companies get a handle on the unstructured data - files, PDFs and spreadsheets - on network file servers and network-attached storage (NAS) devices. Here's a look at 10 of the more intriguing players in this field:

Abrevity

Founded: January 2003.
Based: Cupertino, Calif.
Product: FileData Classifier and Analyzer intelligent information management software.
File types supported: CIFS, NFS and Exchange.
What's new: Announced that its FileData Classifier software is now available for $10,000 for 3TB of data.
How the company got its start: The founders were looking to solve information management issues they had seen in their previous professional lives at global file system company Acirro.
Funding: Private.
CEO: Richard Preston, formerly of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Who's using the product: BD Biosciences, Cox Communications and Stanford University.
How the company got its name: The founders wanted one that would put it at the top of alphabetical lists.
