EMC on Tuesday acquired Avamar Technologies for $165 million to bolster its data-protection portfolio.

Long rumored, the acquisition puts EMC thick in the midst of the data-protection market. It complements EMC’s Networker, Dantz Retrospect and continuous data-protection products it acquired from Legato, Dantz, Kashya and now Avamar. EMC can now offer a continuum of backup and recovery products, ranging from traditional backup software, to continuous data protection, to disk-based backup with data deduplication to both local and remote data replication.

Avamar makes deduplication software, which backs up only unique elements of data. The technology has become increasingly popular as vendors of virtual tape library products, such as Diligent, Sepaton and Data Domain, have implemented it. Avamar’s Axion software will be integrated with EMC’s Legato Networker backup platform.

Among Avamar’s competitive advantages are installations at some 400 customers. Avamar has 101 employees and is led by CEO Ed Walsh. The company has $51 million in funding.

EMC has acquired almost 30 companies in the data protection, systems management and security market in the past three years.
