StoreVault, a division Network Appliance created last June to cater to small and midsize customers, Monday unveiled new features for its S500 storage array aimed at providing SMBs with greater data protection and improved connectivity options.
The S500 array now includes data replication capabilities that let users copy file and block-level data to one or more local or remote StoreVault S500s. StoreVault Replication is built into the array’s management software and the vendor’s Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition operating system.
Also new to the S500 is an optional Fibre Channel starter kit, which consists of a host bus adapter, a 10-port 4Gbps Fibre Channel switch, and QLogic's SANsurfer Express management software. The starter kit is designed to help first-time storage area network (SAN) users expand their network-attached or iSCSI-based StoreVault S500s to include Fibre Channel connectivity.
StoreVault’s S500 array can scale to 6T bytes and competes with low-end arrays from EMC, HP, Snap Server and Dell. Unlike these arrays, which attach to the network as only iSCSI, network-attached or SAN devices, the S500 connects as all three.
StoreVault Replication starts at $1,500 for each StoreVault S500 array. Pricing for the StoreVault FC Starter Kit from QLogic starts at $4,000.
