Google began incorporating YouTube content into its video search engine on Thursday in a move to integrate the two sites following Google’s purchase of the video service.
Before today, users performing a search on the Google home page already could find links to videos hosted on YouTube.
The Google Video search results, however, included only content hosted on Google Video itself. Now, the Google Video search engine turns up YouTube results as well.
When you search Google Video for “Jon Stewart,” for example, the first three results are YouTube videos of the comedian’s famous appearance on CNN's "Crossfire."
Google closed its acquisition of YouTube in November. In Google’s press release today, it said YouTube will remain an independent subsidiary and continue to operate separately.
Adding YouTube results to the Google Video search engine may be just the first step to expanding the search engine’s reach.
“Over time, Google Video will become even more comprehensive as it evolves into a service where you can search for the world’s online video content, irrespective of where it may be hosted,” Google said in a press release.
