IBM on Monday announced that it is acquiring Softek Storage Solutions to bolster its data migration portfolio.
IBM plans to merge Softek’s technology into its Storage and Data Services business unit in IBM Global Technology Services, where it can help customers plan and move data. The acquisition will better position IBM to compete with EMC, which has its own data migration and consolidation services.
Softek’s Transparent Data Migration Facility (TDMF) migrates data between open systems and mainframe environments. The company also has data replication software and disaster recovery software.
Softek was founded in 2000 as a subsidiary of Amdahl, which was acquired by Fujitsu. Customers of Softek include British Telecom, Lufthansa and KeyCorp. IBM has partnered with Softek previously.
Financial terms or the acquisition were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to close this quarter.
