Whisher on Tuesday will launch a free software program designed to let Wi-Fi users take advantage of wireless networks operating in the proximity, as well as adding features such as instant messaging and file sharing to members of the Whisher community.

The software, which works with a wide variety of Wi-Fi hardware, helps users find the best access points available to them and helps them connect, says Ferran Moreno, co-founder and CEO of Whisher.

Whisher users can take advantage of the included encryption and bandwidth-sharing control features, and can offer comments about wireless hotspots to share with others, says Moreno. Users can also take part in the wireless community by sharing files, sending instant messages, or setting up their own networks.

“Wi-Fi signals are everywhere and constantly growing, but the process of connecting to them is going from bad to worse,” said Moreno in a prepared statement. “Whisher will give people the means to create networks within networks, to reinvent the way we search for content or communicate with others.”

The beta release of Whisher will be available on Tuesday as a free download from the company’s Web site. It works with Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

Whisher, based in Barcelona, Spain, says its competes with Google WiFi, Boingo, and FON. The company on Tuesday announced it has received an investment from Benchmark Capital and Swisscom, but would not disclose the amount.
