A pair of vendors – EqualLogic and Coraid – this week unveiled separate storage arrays that attach to the Gigabit Ethernet network.
EqualLogic bolstered its family of iSCSI storage arrays Tuesday with the addition of a high-end storage system. Coraid announced a new version of its SR1521 EtherDrive Storage Appliance.
The EqualLogic PS3900XV is the largest of EqualLogic’s arrays boasting as much as 4.8TB of Serial Attached SCSI storage. The array is the third array in Equallogic’s family of high-performance arrays, first introduced last September.
The PS3900XV uses 15,000rpm drives and supports VMware Infrastructure 3 environments, Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server and Oracle database environments. The array is compatible with EqualLogic’s existing Serial ATA drives. It features redundant, fault-tolerant hardware and includes storage management and tiering software.
The PS3900XV is expected to ship next month starting at $67,000.
The new Coraid EtherDrive Storage Appliance is a free-standing storage array that accommodates as much as 11.25TB of storage capacity. It connects to the network via a proprietary ATA over Ethernet (AoE) protocol. AoE, according to Coraid, is a block level protocol that eliminates TCP/IP processing overhead and host bus adapters and is less expensive than iSCSI or Fibre Channel connections. The protocol works in Mac OS X, Windows, Solaris and FreeBSD environments.
The SR1521T features 15 Serial ATA drives in a 4U (7-inch) high enclosure and two Gigabit Ethernet connections. It supports RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 for fault-tolerance and has redundant hot-swappable power supplies.
The SR1521T starts at $4,500.
