At least 33 people are dead as the result of a lone gunman opening fire on a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., according to news reports. The gunman, who killed himself, is among those dead, Associated Press reports.
More than two dozen others were injured in the rampage, which started early this morning (university police received a 911 call at 7:15 a.m.). This is being called the deadliest shooting massacre in U.S. history.
"The university was struck today with a tragedy of monumental proportions," wrote university president Charles Steger in a statement. (A podcast of the statement is available here.) "The university is shocked and horrified that this would befall our campus."
Students were urged by the school via e-mail to stay in their dorms during the shootings.
The school is renowned for its engineering school and football program.
