Zoho Notebook released in public beta

Free online tool lets users create and aggregate multiple types of content
By Jon Brodkin , Network World , 05/23/2007

LAS VEGAS -- A free online notebook application used to create and aggregate content was made available in a public beta this week at Interop.

Zoho Notebook, a product of the vendor AdventNet, lets users create pages composed of many types of digital content, such as text, audio, video and images, and collaborate on the building of that content. Notebook is one of 12 Zoho applications, and integrates with other Zoho tools, allowing users to do their word processing or work on a spreadsheet within a notebook page.

“Inspired by the traditional spiral-bound notebook, Zoho Notebook serves as a one-stop destination for accessing and sharing content that is often scattered across the desktop, e-mail, applications, Web sites and elsewhere,” a press release states. “With Zoho Notebook, users can create and collect multimedia content from multiple sources or applications. Taking advantage of Zoho Notebook’s fine-grained controls for collaboration, users can then share content with others.”

Users can import video from YouTube and other sources, or record with a Web cam. Video, images and other content can be placed anywhere on a Zoho Notebook page.

Zoho Notebook had about 100 users in a private beta.

“In the private beta we just gave access to selected users, to get some feedback on the product,” says Raju Vegesna of AdventNet. “In the public beta we’re opening it up to everyone and we also added features.”

A new versioning feature allows users to keep track of multiple versions of documents, and also to keep track of multiple versions of individual paragraphs.

Zoho has positioned itself as a competitor to Microsoft Office and Google’s set of online office applications. The Zoho office suite includes e-mail, wikis, Web conferencing, an online database application creator, chat and several other applications. All are free except project management and CRM.
