Xiotech on Monday launched a storage system that captures, classifies and manages an organization's electronic information and e-mails for compliance purposes.

The Xiotech Corporate Evidence Management System (CEMS) stores e-mail messages, 390 types of attachments and electronic documents, such as Word and PDF files.

Once information is stored on the device, CEMS inspects the document and classifies it based on rules the IT administrator has set for retention and destruction. A copy of the document then is saved in the CEMS repository. Using search software, IT administrators can audit, analyze and identify e-mails and documents that have the characteristics required for legal evidence.

Notifications can be sent to individuals for any e-mail or document that violates a policy set in CEMS.

The smallest CEMS system can store approximately 2TB of captured documents and is designed for organizations that generate fewer than 10,000 electronic documents a day. The largest CEMS appliance is configured to store approximately 6TB of data and handle 40,000 to 80,000 documents a day. It has a deduplication function, which prevents redundant information from being stored.

CEMS starts at $245,000 and includes an implementation service.
