Backup vendor Atempo today rolled out new software that lets businesses archive and retain file data.

The Atempo Archive Server is software for Windows, Linux or Unix servers that lets enterprise businesses archive files, directories and other unstructured data such as spreadsheets and PDF files. The product, which is complementary to Atempo's other data protection and backup software, comes with a rules engine that lets IT administrators determine the retention period for data. In a future release, the Archive Server will be able to manage structured data.

The Archive Server is based on the Open Archival Information System specification, proposed by the International Standards Organization.

Further, the Archive Server supports disk, tape, write once read many media and tape libraries. It features a metadata-based management system and can support as many as 15,000 users and 1 billion files.

Atempo’s Archive Server will compete with EMC’s Centera and Network Appliance’s NearStore.

Expected to be available by the year-end, the Archive Server pricing depends on the number of users and capacity of data under management. It generally will start at $15,000.
