Juniper scales down service router

Juniper E120 is intended to let service providers extend multiplay services -- voice, video, data and wireless

Juniper this week expanded its E-series edge router line with a lower-end unit designed for smaller points of presence.

The E120 Broadband Services Router (BSR) is a scaled-down version of the company’s E320 BSR. It is intended to let service providers extend multiplay services -- voice, video, data and wireless -- to untapped markets served by smaller POPs.

The E120 features 120Gbps of capacity and supports as many as 64,000 individual subscribers, Juniper says. The E120 also shares the same JUNOSe operating system, line cards and interface modules as the E320, the company says.

Introduced less than two years ago, the E320 boasts an installed base of nearly 800 platforms in more than 70 provider networks.

Juniper says its E-series routers, including the new E120, are designed to facilitate advertising revenue for service providers. They do this by translating Internet Group Management Protocol traffic into detailed program data, which enables providers to gather real-time viewing statistics for national, regional and local advertisers.

Advertisers can then use this data to deliver localized, targeted ad campaigns based on geographic, demographic and usage-based patterns. The E120 lets service providers extend this subscriber information to broader markets, Juniper says.

Juniper says it has completed interoperability and joint testing with an initial set of partners that will enable service providers and advertisers to take advantage of the detailed subscriber program data collection capability of the E-series routers. The partners include:

* HP, with centralized business intelligence systems that collect, analyze and report viewing data, and make ad placement decisions.

* Packet Vision, for a targeted and addressable advertising service for IPTV.

* NebuAd, for targeted browser-based ad insertions for high-speed Internet users.

* SeaChange International, for various advertising options.

The E120 BSR is expected to be generally available for deployment in the third quarter. Pricing was not disclosed.
