SAN FRANCISCO Fujitsu Microelectronics of America and 123ID Tuesday introduced a fingerprint reader and a biometric logon kit that integrates with Novell’s eDirectory and is designed to tighten user-access control.

Fujitsu made the announcement at the annual LinuxWorld conference going on this week.

The biometric logon is designed to replace smart cards, tokens, and user name and password as authentication methods for users. The biometric device is supported on Novell’s eDirectory running on Linux, NetWare and Windows.

Fujitsu will deliver the fingerprint reader, which connects to a desktop or laptop via a USB port. The reader will come in two flavors: a single-touch sensor and Fujitsu’s Sweep Sensor technology.

123ID is providing its Universal Matching System, including developer kits for Linux, Windows, Java, Mac and Solaris. The company will also provide a Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS) interface for eDirectory.

Fujitsu plans to support a disconnected mode that will enable offline login and roaming feature that lets users move from machine to machine.

“Imagine doctors in a medical establishment who wish to gain access to the network at various stations in the hospital and have the same level of security and reliability as they would in their office,” said Keith Horn, chief operating officer for Fujitsu Microelectronics of America.

The eDirectory biometric also features self-enrollment, integration with other NMAS methods such as Secure Login. The 123ID technology also integrates with Novell’s SuSE Linux desktop client.

Fujitsu’s login kit for eDirectory also runs on Windows XP or 2000 SP4 with Novell Client for Linux version 4.91 SP2 or later. The kit requires a 200-MHz or faster CPU with a minimum of 64MB of RAM.

The logon kit is slated to ship in September and pricing begins at $250 for an administrator’s kit and $100 for the client kit.
