The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has named Casey Coleman as its new CIO. Coleman, the agency's first female CIO, has served in an acting capacity in the position since June.

Before becoming acting CIO for the GSA, Coleman held the same post at the GSA's Federal Acquisition Service (FAS), according to the statement. In that position, she was responsible for the delivery of IT, management services and business applications to support FAS.

Coleman is also involved with the federal IT community and is a board member of the Government Information Technology Executive Council.

A native Texan, she holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Texas A&M University and a master's degree in business administration and finance from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Coleman replaces Mike Carleton, who left the GSA earlier this summer to join the Department of Health and Human Services as its CIO and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Information Technology.

"Casey Coleman is the right person to fill this crucial position for GSA," GSA Administrator Lurita Doan said in the statement. "The skills Casey demonstrated at the Federal Acquisition Service (FAS) give me great confidence she will be able to help the Office of the CIO meet its many challenges, including reducing the cost and improving the quality of government services and reducing technology risk."
