Orchestria on Wednesday announced its foray into the data-loss prevention market with a hardware and software package designed to help companies prevent sensitive data and intellectual property from leaving the organization without authorization

Orchestria Data Loss Preventionworks at the network, server and client levels and can inspect a variety of data stores -- including encrypted messages and information stored on disconnected laptops and mobile storage devices -- to scan for sensitive information, according to company officials.

The company claims that the average employee sends roughly 200 e-mail messages per day, and estimates that 0.1 % of those may contain sensitive information that should not leave the organization. At a company of 25,000 employees, that means as many as 5,000 violations per day are possible, they say.

At the base of the new product is Orchestria’s Intelligent Control Layer, also used in the company’s intelligent compliance, legal hold and records management products. This layer monitors and manages electronic communications, actions and file activity across a company’s computing and communication platforms.

On top of this layer Orchestria has added five agents -- client, server, network, archive, and import -- that implement a company’s customized policies regarding identifying and blocking sensitive data.

Orchestria’s Network Boundary Agent is an appliance that scans e-mail messages, Web pages and files to analyze content and detect protected information, officials say. Another appliance, Orchestria’s File Scanning Agent, does the same with data stored in a company’s file systems, content repositories and collaboration tools such as Lotus Notes.

The product also includes software that performs full-dimensional analysis, which in scanning for sensitive data analyzes content in context, examining surrounding content, message sender and recipients, user input and other factors to determine the nature of the information, officials say. By analyzing the context as well as the content, Orchestria’s software cuts down significantly on false positives, or information wrongly classified as sensitive.

Software is also included to take action if a violation is discovered. If a user attempts to access or send sensitive data that violates the company policy, the software will block or correct the action or quarantine the e-mail containing the information, officials say.

The Orchestria Data-Loss Prevention product starts at $100,000, including the software and two agent appliances.
