Blue Lane Technologies next week plans to release an updated version of its VirtualShield software product, which provides monitoring, protection and patch-update assistance for VMware’s clustered ESX virtual-machine platform.

According to Blue Lane’s senior vice president of product operations, Allwyn Sequeira, VirtualShield 4.0 provides a template that lets IT administrators proactively provision VirtualShield security protections to VMware-defined VirtualCenter clustered computer groups.

“You can now have a cluster policy,” says Sequeira. “It can be a policy for managing ESX blades inside the rack in integration with VMware’s VirtualCenter.”

With clustered computer groups using VMware’s VMotion, network administrators can assign different virtual machines to different hosts. “But you have to have security on board, and per cluster, you can provision VirtualShield based on a template,” he says.

The VirtualShield product includes the VirtualFlow Center console management for port-based policy administration and dynamic-content updates for VMware’s VirtualCenter platform.

VirtualShield performs discovery of virtual servers, including their applications, ports and protocols. It can define allowed processes, plus monitor the traffic flowing through them, and replicate the function called for in a security patch while also making it possible to download appropriate patches from Blue Lane.

Blue Lane’s VirtualShield 4.0, which is expected out Oct. 5 in the Enterprise Edition, costs $699 per year, per ESX 3 license.
