Q1 Labs this week will unveil details around a new appliance the company says will give IT managers the event and log management capabilities they need to get and stay in compliance with regulatory requirements such as those laid out in Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).

QRadar SLIM (Simple Log and Information Management) is a stand-alone appliance that installs in a data center and collects event and log data from network and security devices, applications, operating systems and servers. The technology can scale to collect more than 75,000 events per second and generate reports for PCI, FISMA, GLBA and HIPAA, which the vendor says will help IT managers quickly meet compliance needs within their organizations.

"Organizations are under increasing pressure from auditors, partners and upper management to demonstrate that they are protecting information and infrastructure appropriately," writes Forrester Research principal analyst Paul Stamp in recent report. "Some regulations, like PCI DSS, for example, specifically mandate log management."

Q1 Labs comes up against a slew of vendors in the log management market. For instance, security information management vendors such as ArcSight, eIQnetworks, Intellitactics and netForensics also offer log management tools. And log management vendors such as LogLogic, LogRhythm. Prism Microsystems and SenSage develop products to capture and analyze log data for compliance, security and other purposes.

QRadar SLIM is scheduled to be available in mid-November, and pricing for the appliance starts at $24,000.
