Check Point Software is adding e-mail security to its multifunction security platform, and bundling that with update services for software and signature libraries to make a package for small-to-midsize businesses.

Called UTM-1 Total Security, the package includes the hardware, security software, a subscription to services that keep the security software up-to-date, and management software. Previously, Check Point called the device UTM-1 and sold the services separately.

Unified-threat-management devices (compare products) include a firewall, site-to-site and remote-access IPSec VPN, SSL VPN, antivirus and antispyware software, Web filtering, intrusion prevention, and e-mail security.

The new e-mail security function comprises content-based spam protection, reputation filtering, block/allow lists, virus protection, zero-day threat protection and e-mail intrusion prevention.

The security update services that come with the UTM-1 Total Security package are for virus signatures, URLs and messaging-security updates, as well as security advisories about new threats and how to deal with them.

The starting price for UTM-1 Total Security is $10,500, which provides the UTM-1 450 hardware and software, as well as a one-year subscription to the update services. It also includes reduced support rates.

Check Point’s major competitors for these types of appliances are Cisco and Juniper Networks.
