Enterasys Networks is expected to soon expand its 10Gigabit Ethernet switching line with modules for its high-end platforms and new edge devices.
Next month, the company plans to unveil new modules for the Matrix X-series core router that allow the system to accommodate up to 256 10G Ethernet ports in a single rack at a list price per port of $3,750. The previous limit was 128 10G Ethernet ports. (Learn more about access switch products from our access switch Buyer's Guide.)
The Matrix N-Series switch, meanwhile, will also double previous 10G Ethernet port density to 28 on the seven-slot Matrix N7 from 14.
For the edge, the new SecureSwitch G3-Series switch offers up to 12 10G Ethernet ports at $1,275 list price per port. The G3 is designed to support business-critical enterprise applications such as IP telephony, HD video conferencing, distance learning, business intelligence, ERP, CRM and Internet connectivity, Enterasys says.
The G3 series provides up to 96 ports of Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in either 10/100/1000Mbps RJ-45 with integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE) options or 1G Ethernet ports via Small Form Factor Pluggable fiber-optic transceivers. As many as 12 10G Ethernet ports are supported via Small Form Factor Pluggable fiber-optic transceivers, Enterasys says.
Bandwidth, QoS and security policy control is offered for up to eight users per port based on L2/L3/L4 traffic visibility. Optional firmware upgrades enable advanced IPv4 routing or IPv6 routing.
And a new model of Enterasys' SecureStack C3 stackable gigabit switch now comes with dual 10G Ethernet uplinks at a list price of $1,900 per 10G Ethernet port.
The SecureSwitch and SecureStack products offer a limited lifetime warranty featuring advance replacement and no-charge firmware upgrades, Enterasys says.
The Enterasys 10G Ethernet rollout comes as its competitors also unveil higher speed enhancements to their Ethernet switches. Cisco this week, for example, unveiled a number of 10G Ethernet and PoE extensions to its Catalyst line to support higher-performance applications and real-time collaboration. And Juniper next week is expected to unveil its entrée into enterprise LAN switching with a line of security-enabled core and edge switches supporting 10G Ethernet.
The Matrix X-Series and Matrix N-Series 10G Ethernet modules will ship next month. The SecureSwitch G3 and SecureStack C3 10G Ethernet products will be generally available late in the first quarter or early in the second.
