In addition to the Nexus 7000 data center switch, Cisco this week will also unveil 10 Gigabit Ethernet enhancements to its Catalyst 6500 switch as well as a new “top of rack” device for the data center.

Cisco is rolling out a 16-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet module for the Catalyst 6500 that provides up to 130 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet per Catalyst 6500, and 260 ports per Catalyst 6500 Virtual Switching System. The new module doubles the 10 Gigabit Ethernet port density of the Catalyst 6500 for campus LAN aggregation and bandwidth scalability for video, mobility and collaboration applications.

Cisco will also unveil the Catalyst 6509 Enhanced Vertical Chassis (V-E) for its Catalyst 6500-E Series switches. The Catalyst 6509-V-E chassis offers nine vertical slots and support up to 80Gbps per slot.

Currently, the Catalyst 6509-V-E supports the Catalyst 6500 Supervisor Engine 720 and 32 switching modules.

For data center rack-server aggregation, Cisco will roll out the Catalyst 4900M Series. The Catalyst 4900M is a 320Gbps, 250 million packets per second, two-rack-unit, fixed-configuration switch that offers up to 40 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet ports, or 24 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Cisco will also announce that its Catalyst Blade Switch 3100 will be available through Dell. The 3100 provides Gigabit Ethernet access from the server edge out to the clients at the network edge, with 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks.

Cisco may also line up OEM agreements with HP and IBM for the 3100 this week, the company says.
