YouTube opens doors to more sources of video

YouTube wants to make it easier for other applications and Web sites to upload videos to its online repository, with the goal of becoming a general-purpose video services platform rather than just a video sharing site.

Early Wednesday, it published details of new APIs that will allow Web site operators and software developers to upload videos to YouTube, edit the titles, descriptions and ratings of videos and customize the user interface of the YouTube video player so that it fits the look of their site or application. (Watch Network World's latest videos.)

Among the companies planning to make use of YouTube's new interfaces is TiVo, which will allow users of its latest digital video recorders with a broadband Internet connection to view YouTube videos on their TVs. TiVo plans to add the new feature to the software in its Series3 recorders later this year, allowing users to select from the videos in their YouTube account using their TiVo remote, the company said Wednesday.

Other uses of the APIs include sharing recorded highlights of video games, or automating the capture and uploading of video from regular events such as lectures.

For the first, Electronic Arts will connect its upcoming game, Spore, with YouTube, allowing players to publish clips of the in-game creatures they control as they simulate the evolution of a microorganism into an intelligent species, YouTube said.

The University of California at Berkeley plans to use the YouTube interfaces to automate the recording and publication of lectures as a way to distribute free educational materials, the company said.
