E-mail service provider Azaleos Monday said it was expanding its focus and would add a remote monitoring service centered on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server.
The company unveiled the beta of OneStop ViewPoint at the annual Interop conference in Las Vegas. The service lets users keep
their SharePoint servers and data inside the firewall while Azaleos remotely keeps track of management and maintenance.
It is the same model the company uses with Microsoft Exchange.
Azaleos plans to offer both physical and virtual appliances, called OneServer, for installing SharePoint locally and the OneStop monitoring service will be offered as an add-on to Exchange services.
SharePoint is quickly becoming a runaway success for Microsoft. It has become a billion-dollar business for Microsoft and is one of its fastest growing servers in history. The server's six focus areas are collaboration, portal, search, enterprise content management, business process management and business intelligence. (Compare collaboration products. )
Last month, Microsoft unveiled a hosted version of SharePoint Server 2007 but it is a pure online service that does not have users running SharePoint locally.
"Not having a hosted operation for SharePoint is even more important that with Exchange," says Scott Gode, vice president
of product management for Azaleos. "The size of the data files with SharePoint can be huge and you don't want to go over the
wire to bring those things down." Azaleos says they see average file size for SharePoint in the 2M to 3 MB range.
Azaleos Viewpoint monitors not only SharePoint, but the other servers that are or can be part of the platform, including Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft's Internet Information Server, Windows Server, Active Directory, VMware Host Server, applications and
storage. ViewPoint collects 2,000 data points per minute related to the operation of SharePoint and feeds those to the Azaleos
operation center.
Azaleos says its ViewPoint remote systems management service is expected to be generally available before the end of September. Pricing has not been announced.
