Workers call off strike at Zambia's Zamtel

By Michael Malakata , IDG News Service , 05/05/2008

Workers at Zambia Telecommunications have called off their strike after being assured that management is working on a number of measures to cut expenses and improve conditions for workers and the company's operations.

The four-day strike, which paralyzed the operation of the company countrywide, ended Friday.

The general secretary of the National Union of Communication Workers, Wellington Chella, said there was no need for workers to continue striking because the company's acting CEO, Mukela Muyunda, assured the workers that steps are being taken to address their concerns. Measures include cutting down the number of directors and stopping unnecessary travel by senior management.

However, a number of workers will still have to be laid off, according to Chella. The National Union of Communication Workers is a union representing Zamtel employees and other communication workers in the country.

Last Monday, Zamtel workers went on strike, demanding improved salaries and conditions of services. Zamtel is a government-run communication company employing 2,700 workers countrywide. The company plans to lay off 800 workers this year to save the company from collapsing because it was operating at a US$44 million deficit.
