LG Display has succeeded in developing a pair of round LCD panels and will show them for the first time this week at an event in the United States, it said Wednesday.
One of the panels is circular and measures 35.5 millimeters in diameter, which makes it about the right size to be used in a wristwatch. The other panel is elliptical and measures 78.8 millimeters by 131.4 millimeters and could be used in digital photo frames or in car or home electronics devices. Both can display up to 262,000 colors and have a 160 degree viewing angle, the company said.
They will be unveiled at the Society of Information Display's (SID) conference that starts on Sunday in Los Angeles. Commercialization plans were not announced.
With LCD panels becoming so commonly used in televisions, cell phones, car entertainment systems, music players and other devices the development of panels in shapes other than square is seen as a natural step by many in the industry. LG Display's prototypes aren't the first that don't have corners. Last year Toshiba unveiled a 75-millimeter (62 millimeter actual screen size) diameter circular LCD and said that it could also make LCD panels in other shapes.
LG Display, which was until recently called LG.Philips LCD, is one of the world's largest LCD panel makers.
