Expand Networks has landed $8.5 million more in venture funding from Intel Capital plus its previous investors. The WAN optimization company says it will use the money to support research and development in virtualization and to finance near-term technology buys.

Expand makes Compass Accelerators, devices that perform a variety of compression, protocol optimization, application optimization and pattern caching to speed up applications over WAN links. (Compare application acceleration and WAN traffic optimization products.)

The company already received $25 million in venture funding in 2000, $9 million in 2005 and $21 million in 2007.
