Dell's chief technology officer, who has been with the company for 13 years, will retire in mid-January, Dell said on Wednesday.
Kevin Kettler's decision to leave is a personal one based on his desire to focus on his family and interests outside of Dell, said David Frink, a Dell spokesman.
"He played a lead role in shaping Dell's [product] technology and strategy. He pushed innovation across the organization," Frink said.
Dell has been aware of Kettler's plans to retire "for some time" and is looking for a successor to ensure a smooth transition, Frink said.
Prior to Dell, Kettler spent 12 years at IBM.
The announcement comes a week after Dell said it is implementing cost-cutting measures to help it better weather the economic storm. It has started a hiring freeze and is offering workers unpaid time off and a voluntary separation plan.
