Fujitsu plans to launch two series of 2.5-inch enterprise hard-disk drives based on the faster 6G bps (bits per second) version of the serial-attached SCSI (SAS) interface in the first half of 2009, it said Monday.

Arriving during the first quarter will be the 10,025-rpm "MBD2 RC" series drives while the 15,000-rpm "MBE2 RC" drives are scheduled to follow in the second quarter.

Few other details about the specific drives were available but Fujitsu did say the former MDB2 family will be available at capacities up to 300G bytes and the latter MBE2 family in models up to 147G bytes.

The new 6G bps interface delivers a performance increase of 60 percent to the internal transfer speed. That should mean users will see better performance from the drives.

The drives are designed for server and high-capacity storage applications. Fujitsu hopes to sell five million of the MBD2 drives in fiscal year 2009, which is the period from April 2009 to March 2010, and 1.5 million of the MBE2 drives over the same period, it said.
