Mobile telecommunications operator MTN expects to introduce seamless roaming across its 21 operations in Africa and the Middle
East in the first half of 2009, according to a news statement issued from the company's Johannesburg headquarters.
The new development follows the successful commercial launch of the roaming service, MTN One World, in Cameroon, Ghana and
Nigeria. MTN Benin is scheduled to launch the service by the end of the month.
"MTN One World is another effort that underscores our commitment to continually provide service innovations that improve service
to our growing subscriber base and meet our customers' needs," said Nozipho January-Bardill, MTN executive of corporate affairs.
The service allows prepaid subscribers travelling between participating countries to recharge or top up their accounts using
airtime vouchers from any participating country.
Pre- and post-paid customers will be charged the local rate in the country from which they are calling, and travelers will
receive free incoming calls.
MTN recognizes the growing volume of travelers within the region and believes that One World will offer subscribers an appropriate
value proposition, said Christian de Faria, MTN regional vice president for West and Central Africa.
"We are confident that this convenience will benefit our customers and provide them with a unique MTN experience," de Faria
said.
MTN One World follows in the footsteps of Zain's One Network, which the rival telecom introduced this year to offer a seamless
roaming platform across its 22 African and Middle Eastern operations.
