The boards of the AeA (formerly the American Electronics Association) and the Information Technology Association of America have approved a merger of the two trade associations, and the groups will become the Technology Association of America.

The organizations say the union will give tech companies a stronger voice in the United States.

"For all of its impact on everyday life, the technology industry has had insufficient clout in Washington and the state capitals – until now," said ITAA Chairman Hank Steininger, a managing partner at Grant Thornton, in a statement. "Together, our associations will become the clear leader."

The fact that tech trade organizations would merge comes as no surprise in light of the busy M&A activity throughout the industry this year.

The combined outfit, which represents about 2,000 member companies, will serve to advocate on tech issues at the state and national levels and offer programs in major industrial centers. The group also will take part in the World Information Technology and Services Alliance to synch up with tech associations in nearly 70 other countries.
