Iomega on Tuesday announced new features for its StorCenter ix2 Network Drive, a network attached storage (NAS) appliance that works with Mac OS, Linux and Windows. The StorCenter ix2 is available in
1TB and 2TB configurations for US$300 and $480, respectively.
The StorCenter ix2 uses an embedded Linux kernel to operate. It provides media serving capabilities, Bluetooth and video surveillance
support, and comes with a Gigabit Ethernet port and USB 2.0 ports that can be used for printers, so it can act as a print
server as well.
Inside are two 7200RPM Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drive mechanisms configured in a RAID Level 1 array, paired to a 400MHz
processor and 128MB RAM.
The device is UPnP and DLNA-compliant, so it can share digital media with devices including the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony
PlayStation 3. It can also share files as an iTunes server.
New to the recent update is the ability to access files and media stored on the ix2 remotely, from any Web browser. You can
change your ix2's settings remotely, as well -- though the service comes with a fee (the first year is free, it costs $10
per year thereafter).
Also new in this release is support for BitTorrent downloading, making it easier to download large media files to the device.
Folder quotas let you set a maximum capacity for shared storage folders, and jumbo frame support increases data flow for larger
files when network traffic increases.
Iomega has improved Mac support, as well, adding native support of Apple File Protocol (AFP).
