Juniper this week unveiled an integrated video monitoring and analysis product for its M and MX series edge routers.

The product, called StreamScope eRM, is designed to enable network operators to perform application-layer video stream quality monitoring to improve performance and scale. The product provides the ability to monitor and analyze MPEG streams in real-time to ensure the quality of video services over cable, wireless and IPTV networks, Juniper says.

Traditionally, video monitoring requires dedicated appliances that may compromise performance and network scale as more are deployed. Integrating video monitoring into edge routers and operating systems eliminates the need for video monitoring specific appliances, and helps improve the performance, reliability and scalability of video monitoring systems, Juniper says.

StreamScope eRM integrates software from Triveni Digital into the services processing engine of the M and MX series routers. Triveni Digital is a provider of digital signal monitoring and analysis products for MPEG analysis, and a software partner of Juniper's.

StreamScope eRM is sold and supported by Juniper as its own product. By tightly integrating the Triveni software with the M and MX routers, and JUNOS operating system, Juniper says StreamScope eRM can identify potential quality issues at multiple levels, from the network layer through the MPEG layer.

And by supporting the 10 Gigabit Ethernet links on the M and MX series platforms, StreamScope eRM offers up to 10 times the scalability of many typical video monitoring appliances, Juniper says.

StreamScope eRM is expected to be available as an optional feature for the MX and M series in the second half of 2009. Pricing was not disclosed.
