89% of UK ready to receive digital TV

8.9 million homes use digital video recorder

Nearly nine out of ten UK homes are capable of receiving digital TV, says Ofcom.

Research by the watchdog also revealed that 8.9 million homes in the UK have a digital video recorders (DVR) that can record, pause and rewind live TV. One million of these devices were purchased in the first quarter of this year.

Five million of the DVR's are Sky+ boxes, 2.6 million are Freeview recorders, while the remaining 1.2 million are Virgin Media's V+, BT Vision and Top Up TV boxes.

Ofcom's research also highlighted that sales of Freeview set-top boxes have fallen by 28 percent as sales of TVs with built-in digital TV tuners increase, while 1.9 million UK homes are receiving channels that broadcast in high definition (HD).
