Samsung ditches 1.8in hard drives

Toshiba only manufacturer left

Samsung is thought to have stopped production of 1.8in hard disk drives (HDD) in favour on solid state drives (SSD).

According to Digitimes, Samsung's move means Toshiba is the only supplier of 1.8in hard drives which are "recommended by Intel for ultra-thin laptops or netbooks".

The website also predicted the lack of 1.8in drives available could lead to a price increase in laptops as well as affect shipping dates of PCs due out in Q3.

Samsung's move comes just a week after the company released a new SSD aimed at netbook makers that is about 80 percent smaller than typical 2.5inch laptop drives, a move that should enable even thinner, higher-performing machines.

Samsung has yet to confirm it has halted production of 1.8in drives.
