Alcatel-Lucent this week unveiled additions to its service router portfolio intended to address the requirements of smaller carriers and the remote points of presence of larger ones.

Cool new products of the week

The company rolled out two scaled-down versions of its 7750 Services Router for delivering mobile, residential and business services in smaller communities and verticals such as utilities, transportation, healthcare, public safety, and financial institutions.

The new routers are the three-slot, 5RU 7750 SR-c12, and the one-slot, 3RU 7750 SR-c4. They deliver up to 90Gbps of forwarding capacity and can support edge routing interfaces speeds from T-1 to 10G Ethernet.

They also support native IPv6 in hardware; provide high availability features including non-stop routing, non-stop services, Multi-Chassis-LAG, Multi-link PPP and pseudowire redundancy; and support a range of both legacy and Ethernet interface types.

The routers will compete with edge offerings from Cisco and Juniper, such as Cisco's 7600 series and new ASR9000, and Juniper's M-, E- and MX-series systems. Data from various analysts have Juniper and Alcatel-Lucent in a virtual tie as the second-leading vendor in IP edge services routing to Cisco.

The 7750 SR-c12 and c-4 are available now; Alcatel-Lucent did not disclose pricing.
