More than three-quarters (77 percent) of Brits would rather visit a site that has a .co.uk domain name over a .com domain name, says Nominet.

Research by the internet registry revealed that 187.6 million domain names were registered worldwide this year, that's 8 percent up on last year.

Furthermore, the number of .uk domain names that have been registered this year has increased by 10.7 percent compared to last year. Nominet says there are now are more than 100 UK domain names per 1,000 inhabitants in the UK.

Phil Kingsland, director of marketing and communications at Nominet, said: "It's encouraging to see that despite market saturation and the global economic recession, the .uk registry has remained strong".

"The report demonstrates that both consumers and businesses are willing to invest in 'local' domains because they are seen as reliable, relevant and trusted and will give them a direct route to their target audience."
