Broken Sword creator Charles Cecil has revealed his next project, a full-blown point-and-click adventure game based on the freeware game Minesweeper.

Cecil came up with the idea in response to a call for developers to work on games to raise funds for a good cause. During a recent interview with Martin de Ronde the director of non-profit publisher OneBigGame admitted his surprise at the ideas developers were pitching for charity games. "Charles Cecil [of Beneath a Steel Sky fame] approached us and said he wanted to do an adventure version of Minesweeper, with a backstory as to why the mines are there. I told him to run with it," said de Ronde.

And so he did. York-based adventure game developer Revolution Software has begun work on the new Minesweeper, and though little is known about the title beyond Cecil's involvement (both OneBigGame and Revolution Software PR reps are staying quiet) this may be the mysterious game Cecil alluded to in a recent interview with Eurogamer following the release of a remastered iPhone version of Beneath A Steel Sky. If it's true, the new Minesweeper may be illustrated by Dave Gibbons, a British artist who became famous for his work with Alan Moore on the Watchmen graphic novel and recently collaborated with Cecil on the mobile Steel Sky remake.
