Proposals to ban sex offenders from social networking sites such as Facebook have been dumped after it was revealed the plans breach human rights laws.
The Home Office unveiled the proposals in April this year and required the police to share sex offenders details and email addresses with social networks.
However, it is thought that revealing these details is in conflict with privacy laws, and could result in legal action.
"We're seeking leave to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court," a Home Office spokesman told the Observer.
A similar law has been signed by the Governor of Illinois, making it legal in the US state to ban sex offenders from social networks.
